Zach from Orlando - Down in Hocking Hills, OH

September 2nd 2007.  I’ll remember this date for the rest of my life.  After 7 years of street riding, numerous close calls, and lots of squidliness, my good luck finally ran out…

After a very spirited group ride throughout the twisty bits in SE Ohio and people started parting ways, a few of us still had some miles left in our butts, so we decided to use them up in the search for some good eats.  We had a rough game plan - take the long way, hit some good roads, but drop the pace down a couple pegs.  We meandered our way into the Hocking Hills area which happens to contain some of the best roads Ohio has to offer.

EXTREME ROADRASH… ONE YEAR HAS PASSED

It’s hard to look in the mirror and think that my scars are already an entire year old. Touching my stomach and rib cage, I can’t imagine looking this way and feeling this pain for the rest of my life. I still feel as if at any moment I will wake up from this terrible dream and be comfortable in my own skin once again. Knowing that it’s real, that there is nothing I can do to change it, I am reminded of my mistakes every minute of everyday. I am also reminded how lucky I am to be alive as I close my eyes and remember why I still feel pain after an entire year of healing. Imagining that if I had not survived the accident, I wouldn’t have anything to touch at all, I smile when my fingers run over a thick layer of scar tissue in place of my once soft skin. I know my life has a purpose, and I strive everyday to live up to the task that has been placed at my feet.

It was a hot day in late August of 2007. My best friend Josh with his 04 R6 and I with my 05 cbr f4i, were cruising around town in the empty hours before heading to a memorial ride for our fallen rider friend “noodles”…

We were riding down International and stopped to shoot conversation with some guys at Cycle Gear. When we left there, we raced across the street to the mall to see if there was anyone there that wanted to ride. The parking lot was full, but it was quiet, no moving vehicles anywhere.  So just playing around, Josh accelerated and took the south west corner at a good 60 mph.....

So me being a stupid, inexperienced rider thought, ‘hey, I wanna try!’ So I took off after him. I hit the first corner pretty hard and it was amazing, the wind in my face through the crack of my visor being open was heaven. I wanted more! I never slowed down....

I tried to brake, I tried to swerve around it. My bike just got closer to it and I said something profane. I hit it at an unimaginable speed. I don’t remember flying through the air 20 feet forward but as soon as my body slammed the hot asphalt my eyes opened and I could feel everything…
